A seiko mod is an automatic watch built around a movement made by Seiko Instruments, usually the NH35, with every other part chosen separately: case, dial, hands, bezel, crystal and strap. The movement gives a proven mechanical base that any watchmaker can service; the parts give the style. Before you buy one, check five things: a sapphire crystal, a 316L stainless steel case, a regulated movement, a reachable after-sales service and a written warranty.
Where the word "mod" comes from
"Mod" is short for modification. The hobby started with enthusiasts who opened their own Seiko watches to swap the dial, hands or bezel. Because Seiko Instruments sells its movements to independent brands, a whole market of compatible cases, dials and hands grew around them. Today, "seiko mod" describes any watch assembled from those parts around a Seiko movement, whether you build it yourself or buy it complete from an independent brand such as Modus.
The movement comes from Seiko Instruments; the watch itself carries the name of whoever designed and assembled it.
Which Seiko movement powers a seiko mod?
- NH35: automatic, three hands and date. The most common base: robust, easy to service, with hacking seconds and manual winding.
- NH36: the NH35 with a day display next to the date.
- NH38: no date window, for a cleaner dial.
- NH34: automatic GMT, with a fourth hand that shows a second time zone.
- NH70: a skeletonized automatic movement, for open-worked dials.
- VK63: a "meca-quartz" chronograph. It runs on a battery but its chronograph resets with a mechanical snap.
Our movement guide compares these calibers in detail, and our NH35 guide covers accuracy, winding and service.
Are seiko mods reliable?
The movement itself is very reliable: the NH35 has been produced by the million and spare parts are everywhere. Seiko rates it at −20 to +40 seconds per day. What makes the difference between two seiko mods is everything around the movement:
- Assembly: dust under the crystal, hands that rub against each other or a badly seated dial show up within weeks.
- Water resistance: gaskets must be greased and the case tested. A mod built at home without a pressure tester should stay away from water.
- Parts quality: sapphire rather than mineral glass, 316L steel rather than base metal, lume that actually glows.
The parts of a seiko mod
Case
Machined for one movement family, with a crown at 3 or 4 o'clock. It sets the size on the wrist (most are 38 to 42 mm) and the strap width.
Dial and hands
The dial must match the movement's feet and date window; the hands must match its post sizes. This is where most of the style comes from.
Bezel and crystal
A rotating dive-style bezel, a 24-hour GMT bezel or a plain polished ring. The crystal should be sapphire for scratch resistance.
Strap or bracelet
Steel bracelet, rubber, leather or fabric. Check the lug width, usually 20 mm.
Build it yourself or buy one complete
Building a mod is a rewarding project if you enjoy the work and have the tools: a hand press, a case opener, a blower and a lot of patience. If you mainly want the watch on your wrist, buying it complete avoids dust, misaligned hands and untested water resistance.
At Modus, you can pick a watch already assembled from the collection, or choose every part yourself in the watch configurator: case, dial, hands, bezel, strap, your name or logo on the dial and an engraving on the back. The watch is then assembled and regulated to order.
Five things to check before buying a seiko mod
- A sapphire crystal, not mineral glass.
- A 316L stainless steel case.
- A regulated movement, with the caliber named on the product page.
- After-sales service you can actually reach, and a written warranty.
- No third-party brand name or logo on the dial, caseback or crown: that would make it a counterfeit, not a mod.
Frequently asked questions
Is a seiko mod a real Seiko?
It uses a genuine Seiko Instruments movement; the watch is designed and assembled by another brand or by its owner, and carries that name.
Are seiko mods legal?
Yes, as long as the dial, caseback and crown carry no third-party brand name or logo. A mod with another brand's logo is a counterfeit.
What is the best movement for a first seiko mod?
The NH35: it is robust, widely available, and most cases, dials and hands on the market are made for it.
How long does a seiko mod last?
With a service every five years or so and reasonable care, an NH35-based watch can run for decades. The movement can also be swapped entirely if it ever fails.
